My adventure in gardening this summer was all about one thing: the color purple. I ordered most of my plants through a seed catalog, so I’d have a greater selection, and then it was go time.
There were some mishaps, such as the day I set my itty-bitty ‘Black Cherry’ tomato seedlings outside on my way to work, and it was entirely too cold. I ran to their rescue on my way back in the door, nearly nine hours later. In the end it was too late for about half of my plants and I moaned for days about my poor baby tomatoes.
But there were also triumphs:
Lettuce, Beans (which turn green when cooked) and Basil, Phlox, Sweet Peas
Scallions, Gladiolus, Carrots, Beets
The ultimate surprise was the night I cooked my carrots with pasta. It turned my pasta purple. We aren’t talking about a lavender tinge or a hint of violet. It was flat-out, Willy Wonka-style purple pasta.
Have any of you planted a themed garden? I’m tossing around ideas for next year, so I’d love to hear your suggestions.
